SUPPORTING PEOPLE WORKING AT THE CORE OF POVERTY
Vusi Kweyama was born in South Africa. Growing up in South Africa as a black child is not easy. Vusi did not have toys and like most black children, dreamed of growing up white. To them, the white people had everything. School in his community was poor and did not give Vusi much choice of a future.

Crime in South Africa is a significant problem. It is a pathway easily led by children living below the poverty line. This is because of a lack of education and choices given to them. Becoming a criminal in South Africa, is a job choice. They must still provide for their families with very little education behind them. For most, crime is the only way they can feed their families.

At the age of 15, Vusi was found guilty of shoplifting, for which he received a three-year suspended sentence. To him, becoming a criminal was the only “job” he could do to support himself and his family. For the next eight years, he would be in and out of South African prisons with convictions for housebreaking and theft, robbery, and carbreaking. During those eight years of incarceration, Vusi escaped three times from two youth detention centres.

As Vusi grew older, his crimes became worse and his time in prison, longer. He became a prominent figure in a gang. Which as he describes, you can only do by doing crazy things. Vusi became known for being crazy. He was feared throughout his community for his crimes.

Vusi’s last time in prison was in 2002. Incarcerated in Westville prison after being accused of “house breaking and theft,” his fellow perpetrator was sentenced to two years imprisonment while Vusi was found “not guilty” and released. Within two weeks, Vusi enrolled in a “life skills programme” coordinated by World Changers Academy (WCA) in South Africa. However, his intention was steal their computers, not improve his life. Fortunately, Vusi found significant value and need for this life skills programme. Thanks to it, his life was radically transformed by the courses’ teachings on Vision and Purpose. He was awarded “Best Student”, and even went on to become a teacher at World Changes.

In 2002, Vusi opened his own community centre. He began ‘Light Providers’, so that the children of his community could have what he didn’t. The centre gives children a chance to join sports teams, such as soccer and basketball. As well as learn more skills and build confidence. He believes he can give these children a purpose that will better their future. Through ‘Light Providers’, Vusi can help children stay off the streets and see past a life of crime.

Just this year Vusi has finally finished his university degree at Monash. He has gone from feared criminal to community leader. With his degree, Vusi will be able to help more people in his country find a purpose in life. Vusi has been able to use his story to speak and hopefully motivate people all around the world. From criminals to youth groups, Vusi has made an impact on people’s lives.

Vusi Kweyama is just about to graduate from his scholarship at Monash University. As our subject Vusi is giving up several months of his life, so that he may not only be our story but also our guide around South Africa.
So that he may completely absorb himself into our project we will need to ensure he can survive on the basics. (Rent, food etc)
As filmmakers we are on a tight budget, so we do not have the means ourselves to pay him an appropriate wage. Any donations will be greatly appreciated to help us, help Vusi.
